SPAN 301S SL in the Latino Community
|
My service learning class was a great adventure and amazing experience. This class introduced its students to the world of community service with non-profit institutions. During class lectures I learned how my Hispanic community lived, developed, and during my hours of service I implemented what I had already studied in my classes into my service. I decided to do my forty hours of service at a High School helping students who were learning English. I decided to do this because I was also learning this language when I was a high school sophomore. I felt empathy for all of them because I know how hard it is to have classes in a language that you do not master. After each week of service I wrote an analysis with my experiences and reflections. At the end of my semester I did a presentation with my results of what I learned from my service hours. My final conclusion was that this not only helps you fulfill a university requirement but also makes you grow as a more understandable person and closer to the people that maybe one day in the future, you will serve when you put into practice your professional career.
