SPAN 306 Cultur/Civ Span Ltn America
|
Taught in Spanish, presents an historical and cultural overview of Hispanic Latin America from its pre-Columbian origins to the present through works of literature, art, music, and videos.
In Spanish class 306 I learned about my own culture, my roots, and people from different Spanish-speaking countries who share my story. Every week I read about a country in Latin America. The course began with a very detailed reading about the Spanish conquest. The continuity was the restoration of the colonies, viceroyalties and captaincies. Each chapter of this course connected to the previous one. As we know, all the Spanish-speaking countries in America were conquered by the same country. Which means were governed by the same legal system and practiced the same religion. An important aspect to emphasize, is that this class also showed us a portion of the perspective of the natives before the invasion of Europeans. I also had the opportunity to read a bit of native poetry. A part of my final was explaining and doing a presentation about a Spanish-speaking country. My team and I decided to do it in Venezuela since this is a very beautiful country, even though it is suffering due to its very strong dictatorship. At the end of the course you may notice that I have learned many things that I did not know. For example the curious data that collects the names of our country, like Venezuela that derives from little Venice. It’s name given by the Spanish conquerors to see the great resemblance of Venezuela with its small rivers to the European city of Venice.
