Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. Taught in Spanish

In this class, I have learned the different techniques that exist to make a good translation from English to Spanish. Some of those are a literal translation, borrowing, and compensation. In each class, we learn something new, and the way we learn is through the translation of sentences and paragraphs. Sometimes we work in groups to expand knowledge since everyone has a different way of translating. What I have learned is that making a good translation is not only to know how to translate what is written but to equalize the same meaning in both languages. As a result, sometimes you have to remove or write extra words. In conclusion, this class has helped me a lot in differentiating what is translated and interpreted, since both are very different from each other, and it is by means of translation techniques that a good and efficient interpretation can be obtained.
